Artist Residency in Bulgaria

The last two years were difficult times for everybody. As an independent artist, the pandemic affected me and my work. I decided to invest my time in a way that keeps my creative process going, by taking part in any online art related activities that helped me reach that goal. The latest, is my participation in the World of Co artist residency.

World of Co artist residency is an AIR program based in Sofia – Bulgaria, where artists can work on their research/experiments, and push forward their artistic projects. Initially designed as a physical residency, it was transformed into an online program due to the pandemic situation.

I had the chance to be part of this residency in summer 2021. During this time, I had a great and fruitful experience, where I had the chance to meet and exchange with a wonderful group of international artists and mentors. I was able to continue my research on Social Media Faces and experiment more with video art, receiving constructive feedback during group discussions and crits.

I recommend this residency for artists that are looking to challenge their practice or simply want to have a creative environment to develop their art and creative process. I am looking forward to joining again next summer, but hopefully within the physical space, in-order to feel the city vibes and be able to explore the local art scene.

Interactive Video Installation

“Social Media Faces” (2021), is an interactive video installation by Taline Balian, commissioned by world Art Dubai 2021.

This Video is Part of the video installation “Social Media Faces”

Medium: Video Installation

Social media is a contemporary social problem. Today’s general tendency surprisingly quickly embraced social media because it offered the possibility to become a polished active character in an imaginary world. The unstoppable growing pressure of belonging to the social media community is pushing its users to obsessively apply certain beauty standards in editing and polishing their pictures, producing look-alike posted faces. The over-saturation of these posted pictures and the fixation to look perfect at all time, is leading to the struggle to come back to our original state, therefore, being stuck in a polished cracked reality. Social Media Faces consists of a pile of Rubik’s cubes placed on a table. Portraits of polished resin faces, printed on these cubes, illustrate the over-saturation of the virtual world. The audience will is invited to play with these cubes the way they normally do with Rubik’s cubes, mixing up the facial parts in an attempt to solve the puzzle and fails in most cases; helplessly leaving these faces distorted, similarly to the emotional state the social media followers are left with. In addition to the cubes, a video shows a person attempting to solve the puzzles.

Installation; Mirrors, threads, cardboard, 1mx1m

Social Media Addicts lost their ability to be immersed, since they are required to be conscious in that immersive experience. Everybody is watching. That so-called immersive world, is in fact leading them to become more vulnerable. The more they realize they are stuck in this polished cracked reality, the more they struggle to come out from this disrupted realm.

Universal Data : An Exploration of Our Digital Presence

This exhibition invites us to look at the various facets of our immaterial digital universe, unravelling its impact on humanity through multidisciplinary art forms.

“Every day 2.5 Quintillion bytes of data are created. That’s 2,500,000,000,000,000,000 bytes of data.”
Artists from over twenty nationalities reflect on contemporary topics, such as access to information, digital identity, freedom of expression and online communities. The featured artworks challenge our perspective on access to universal data, making it more tangible through art installations, paintings, sculptures, videos, digital and live performance art.
Being part of the digital culture has changed how we present ourselves online and has evoked new behaviors. Universal Data provokes us to contemplate new forms of expression as well as the side effects of digital technology.
